Well, the government isn't taking the money for itself (as a robber
would), but taking the money and giving it to other people in another
form, in this particular case, to doctors and hospitals and other medical
staff to take care of people. Social security is the same, except it's a
money-to-money transfer.
But, yeah, it's not exactly like selling a service or lending money or
anything like that.
Anyway, my only point is that Americans pay much more for health care than
any other country for worse outcomes, and it's possible that our ideology
is preventing us from selective spending to benefit everyone ("everyone"
meaning "Americans").
