peer to peer mesh off-grid networking

I just watched this.  What I was wondering about is why he had to set up a
internet-facing public server instead of using something like Freenet (or
GNUnet, if that ever gets off the ground) so that you don't have to poke
holes in your firewall or whatever.  I think this is where this technology
will need to go to cast off the traditional internet altogether (if that's
possible).
