death by dementia

That is kinda interesting to think about: whether the underlying problem
will kill you, or whether dementia itself will.

I remember my aunt being horrified that my dad was completely cognizant
when he died in a bed in a hospital.  I think many people would prefer
that they aren't aware that they are about to die, for some reason.

This is probably why those around my wife's dad aren't especially anxious
about his dying because he would be completely oblivious about his own
death (quite aside from the fact that he virtually died years ago due to
his inability to speak or recognize people or do almost anything by
himself).
